Make your Memorial Day menu standout with these Blue Cheese Burgers With Caramelized Onions. The tangy blue cheese flavor combined with the sweet taste of caramelized onions and a smoky grilled burger is a winning combination.
Set a heavy skillet over medium-low heat. Add the olive oil and butter to skillet. When the butter has melted, add onions to skillet; stir to coat. Cook onions, uncovered, for 10 minutes or until they begin to brown. While onions are cooking stir them every couple of minutes. When the onions have started to brown, sprinkle them with the brown sugar. Continue stirring and cooking the onions for about 15 minutes more; they will continue to brown. If the onions look or smell like they are beginning to burn, lower the heat. When the onions are ready, they will be soft but not mushy. Place caramelized onions in a dish and set aside.Beef Patties
Prepare a grill, making sure to spray grill grate with a non-stick cooking spray. Place the ground beef in a large bowl. Season beef with salt and black pepper; lightly mix. Shape the beef into four 4-inch-diameter patties, making sure the center of each patty is thinner than the outer portion of the patty. Cook the patties on the grill for 8 minutes. Flip the patties over. Evenly divide the crumbled blue cheese on top of the patties. Continue cooking the patties for approximately 5 minutes more or until the internal temperature has reached 160ºF when tested with a meat thermometer.
While the patties are cooking, toast the buns by setting them cut side down on the cooler side of the grill. Once toasted, remove buns from the grill. Once the patties have finished cooking, assemble the burgers. Spread some mayonnaise and mustard onto the buns, add the beef patties to the bottoms buns, and add caramelized onions on top of the patties. Add top buns. Serve.
